Significant places include Bodie Island Light Station, Cape Hatteras Light Station, Chicamacomico Life Saving Station, E.M. CLARK (shipwreck and remains) and EMPIRE GEM (shipwreck and remains).

Several famous people are associated with these Dare County historic places including Orville and Wilbur Wright, Theodore S. Meekins, Rasmus Midgett and George Washington Creef.

Some of the country's most noteable architects helped create the Dare County places including John Ericsson, Samuel J. Twine, Theodore S. Meekins, National Park Service, Rogers & Poor, Ralph Lane, Ltd. Glasgow Harland and Wolff, Federal Shipbuilding Co. New Jersey, U.S. Lighthouse Board and Delaware River Shipbuilding Co..
